The Warrior Recreation Center (WRC) serves as a convenient option for students looking to work out on campus. In previous semesters, however, due to a shortage of working equipment, many students found the facility unreliable.
Students are already noticing the changes. “The benching equipment was deteriorating, and now it looks like the padding has been replaced,” said UHM student Momi.
Director of Student Recreation Services (SRS) Ryan Andrews has teamed up with SRS to update the WRC. In total, this fall semester, the facility has been upgraded with 78 pieces of new cardio equipment including treadmills, bikes, rowers, ski ergometers, and StairMaster Stepmills. According to Andrews, treadmills and StairMasters are the most popular amongst students, and to accommodate this demand, the facility has added 25 treadmills and 10 StairMasters.
As for the facility’s future maintenance, the new equipment has a replacement cycle of 5-7 years, in addition to consistent maintenance to minimize downtime. Additionally, new equipment included a five-year warranty, extending two years beyond what most manufacturers typically offer. The facility’s previous equipment had been in use 5 years past its lease, frequently resulting in breakdowns. “Taken together, student feedback, equipment longevity, and overall value for investment are the key factors in our decision-making process,” Andrews said.
To further ensure equipment durability, WRC and SRS are also in the process of hiring a dedicated maintenance technician. “These steps allow us to… extend the life of our equipment, and keep students’ fitness experience at a consistently high level,” Andrews said.
In addition to the adductor/abductor machine that has been replaced, Andrews voiced plans for incremental updates to the strength training area, including an additional set of the popular 5-50 lb dumbbells. Additionally, later in the semester, one bank of lockers will be updated to accommodate larger belongings.
“We want new students to know that Student Recreation Services offers much more than just access to the WRC,” Andrews said. In addition to the WRC’s fitness facilities, SRS also provides two major programs, including Outdoor Education, a selection of adventure-based classes and activities including hiking, sailing, kayaking, scuba, and bodyboarding. In conjunction with the Outdoor Education program, SRS also offers affordable equipment rentals to allow students to explore the island on a budget. Intramural Sports, another major program, includes basketball, volleyball, soccer, and softball.
Students may register for a program at the Warrior Recreation Center or the Student Recreation Services Office on lower campus (Athletics Building -3rd Floor).
“Student Recreation Services aims to be a welcoming, inclusive space where all students can develop community, grow as individuals, and thrive in body, mind, and spirit."
